Women in non-industrial countries are often looked at as dependent. During my ethnographic expeditions and travels, I got to know many, and I am making a point of showing the empowered woman of the world. Every woman anywhere has her sorrows. Yet many in more traditional cultures hold power and rank within their family and social group; their responsibilities and freedoms are structured. Sometimes, it makes life easier and more profound than it is in what people imagine as freedom in western societies.
